About

I call myself Dr. Fieldcoil. I love to restore vintage and unique field-coil speakers, along with some permanent magnet speakers and more. My passion for speaker restoration started when I was 14 years old. I was fascinated by speakers and literally got my start by picking up discarded speakers and radios, 1920’s and 30’s from the curb on the streets and learning how they worked. I started swapping field-coils, or I would take a magnet structure from one speaker and put it in another frame. I was essentially teaching myself how speakers work, and learning what separates the good speakers from the bad speakers.

My passion eventually turned into a job working with theater speakers (high and low frequency drivers) and building systems, some quite large using those drivers.

FAQ:

Do you swap parts?  Hmm…Contact me. I might be interested in a trade, if you have an item i really need. I accept mainly field coil, but some PM Speakers (permanent magnet).

What do you charge to fix this or that?  Prices are on a case to case basis. Some speakers require special, delicate surgery and may have a failed part that is rare or hard to locate.

However, in some cases, your speaker can be restored with the parts that are already in the speaker. Typically, these are cases where there may be a torn cone, or the suspension is damaged, but reparable, voice coil needs recentering and gap cleaned, etc.
